For every smoker, there is a story, a story about how they started and how they want to or have quit. These smoking stories are commonplace. They all have one central theme running through them: smoking is bad.
The quit smoking stories are mostly inspirational. Many people finally quit after a major health scare or for their kids. Personal smoking stories abound about people diagnosed with lung cancer who were spared death. These people believe that they lived just so that they can share those “how they started smoking” stories which help them immediately identify with people in their audience. Then they follow up with their smoking stories about how they quit. Some of the awful smoker’s stories exist to hopefully shake people out of their complacency about quitting “someday.” People as young as their early twenties have died of lung cancer. Tragedies such as this bring out those “start smoking” stories. What the point of these true stories about smoking is that they will scare smokers to go straight. Do these smoking stories actually work? The answer is sometimes. The key to a successful story is one that ends as ex-smoker stories. It is the successes that tend to make a bigger impact than the struggles. Smokers truly do want to quit but that nicotine addiction has a firm hold often times. However, the stories of secondhand smoke are what get some of those die hard smokers to sit up and take more notice. Secondhand smoking stories focus quite a bit on the effects of smoking on the people around you. Basically when you are smoking around others, you are helping not only nail the nail in your coffin, but theirs as well. It is when smokers imagine their kids in these secondhand smoke stories that their desire to quit grows exponentially. Of course, these smoking stories only work to inspire if they are not forced. Smoking stories should be simple and heartfelt. In order to share your experiences, you have to show how sincere you are to gain credibility. In other words, your smoking stories should end positively with you kicking the habit. As mentioned before, smoker’s stories are vast. There are all sorts of stories that revolve around several common themes like how smokers got started, how they quit and even those forced smoking stories where smokers succumbed to peer pressure just to save face. The only thing you can do is learn from them and take some pointers on what works and doesn’t work.
