It seems that while smoking among women is on the decline, there is an alarming number of young girls smoking today. There are girls smoking cigarettes and girls smoking weed. We have pre-teen girls smoking, teen girls smoking, and college girls smoking. This rash of school girls smoking, especially girls smoking pot, has a lot of people concerned, and rightly so. Is this a trend that will continue into adulthood, perhaps creating the first generation of smoking girls in some time to actually increase in numbers?
Smoking is often associated with youth and rebellion. Where this was once the province of adolescent boys, now girls also struggle to find their place among their peers. Often, teen girls smoke cigarettes as a way of being accepted into a niche group of young people. Sometimes it goes a little further than tobacco and we have girls smoking bong and girls inhaling smoke from all around the room. The damage that is being done, not only physically but also emotionally, will create burdens that will have to be carried for many years during adulthood. So how do we address the issue of teen girls smoking and make some sort of an impact before it is too late? While there is not any one way that will work in all situations, there is the process of taking away the mystique of smoking and making is a less desirable means of fitting in and getting what one wants – acceptance. Smoking girls who find that good looking boys don’t want to ask them out may very soon take a second look at how important smoking it to them. Wanting to develop a relationship with somebody and being rebuffed because of a habit that one should be able to take or leave is often strong motivation for making a change. If girls smoking is inhibiting the social life, especially the social interaction with a special someone, then that pack of cigarettes may be in the trash in no time. Getting negative feedback from friends the same age can also cause the smoking girl to think twice about the need to smoke. When you sense that your habits are pushing loved ones away rather than drawing them closer, the habit begins to have less of an attraction. This can begin with something as simple as asking the girl smoking to please do that when she is not around the group. If being in the group is important, she will comply and eventually prefer to spend time with friends than spend time with a cigarette poking out of her lips. Appealing to vanity may help as well. No one likes yellow teeth and bad breath. Also, coming to terms with the fact that smoking can exacerbate skin problems such as acne will also go a long way in making teen girl smoke habits go away. Whatever the method employed, the important thing to do is replace the girls smoking with something more desirable, and the problem will take care of itself.
