When it comes to designing eye catching ads for tobacco products, agencies will look for just the right smoking models to make the ads work. In some instances, the look they want will be sexy and alluring, perhaps almost a Victoria’s secret models + smoking cigarettes combination. These glamorous smoking models add that touch of class to the act of smoking, conjuring up images of the old days when movie stars were willing and able to promote different brands of cigarettes.
Some smoking models have their own niche in the market. For instance, there is the cigar smoking model. Female smoking cigar models are actually just as much in abundance as male smoking models. The tone for each is to convey the uptown look of enjoying a good cigar and how it can be a pleasing experience. There are other smoking models that prefer to work with pipes and of course those that are more comfortable being photographed as part of a campaign for cigarettes. There are even smoking teen models, although these tend to be young people who are used in preparing ads for anti smoking campaigns. Often, these ads will conjure up images of a life being ruined by smoking at a young age. The smoking models that make a living in this venue may or may not stay in the modeling profession as they become older, but at least for a time it is a lucrative way to make money for the summer. The thing about smoking models is that not all of them smoke. When asked how many models smoke, most industry insiders have to stop and think about who they have seen smoke away from the camera. Women models smoking seems to be more of a rarity than male model smoking, but there is no real way to be sure. Suffice it to say that one does not have to actually smoke in order to be a smoking model, as long as the mannerisms come across as natural. Models smoking can be used for pro smoking campaigns and anti smoking campaigns as well. While fashion models smoking on the runways is a thing of the past, magazine ads still are a lucrative place for smoking models to earn a living. Probably as long as people continue to smoke, there will be a need for smoking models to generate business for both the tobacco companies and the agencies that decry any type of tobacco usage.
