It may not have occurred to you that others in your family and circle of friends have some definite opinions about your smoking habit. Here are some possible thoughts that others in your life may be thinking when it comes to your smoking.
Some others may feel caught between a rock and a hard place. They care about you and know the smoking is not doing you any good, but they also respect your right to make your own choices. At the same time, they cannot help but worry that some day you will regret smoking and wonder if they should say something to get you to consider the possibility of quitting. This is a real conundrum for these people, as they want to have you around a long time, but feel it is not their place to say anything unless they are asked what they think. Others in your circle have pretty much come to terms with the fact that you smoke today and you will be smoking for the rest of your life. While they may not like it, their approach is that you make your choices and you live with them, even if you end up dying with them. They are more likely to ask you to not smoke in their homes, and to watch the smoking when the two of you are together in a social setting, but they will not be talking to you about the dangers of smoking and what you are doing to your body. They will leave that to others in your life. Others who know and love you make no bones about what they think about your smoking. They have no trouble reminding you of what you are doing to your body and your health in general. These loved ones will make it known far and wide that your house stinks, your car smells like an ash tray, and that you smell of stale smoke even when you just got out of the shower. These are the others in your life that are determined to wear you down until you finally get some help for your smoking and kick the habit. Among these broad categories of others will be plenty of friends and family who fall somewhere in between. Regardless of what you may think of their opinions, the bottom line is they care about you and want what is best for you in the long run. Make it a point to listen when others express their feelings about your smoking habits and don’t forget to ask those others who tend to hold back until their thoughts are solicited. You may hear something that will trigger you to leave the smoking behind forever.
