Anti-smoking campaigns have become cleverer as the years go by. The reason why these anti smoking campaigns have to do this is that telling the public that smoking is bad is just not enough. Everyone, even the smoker, knows it’s bad but they continue to light up anyway. Anti smoking slogans or any anti smoking commercial you see on TV is either designed for shock value or to shame a smoker into quitting.
Appealing to the emotions seems to be what works the most. For children, an anti smoking cartoon may reach them while anti-smoking slogans depicting adults would work for the older generations. You can tell people, “Don’t smoke.” However, you have to give them reasons why they should pick up the “don’t smoke” crusade. For kids, arguments against smoking seem to work. Children and teens are impressionable. If you depicting the negative aspects to smoking like bad breath, stinky clothes, dingy teeth and all the illnesses you can get, you are likely to reach those teenagers, especially since they are at dating age and therefore want to be attractive to the opposite sex. By promoting the anti smoking message in this light, they will be less likely to even try it. Adults are tougher nuts to crack. Even bans of public smoking are not making a huge dent. While many of them do not wish to inflict their smoke onto a non-smoker, there is still a contingent who is against the smoking ban, saying that their rights are being abused. However, these smokers who don’t seem to care about anyone but themselves seem to be in the minority. To reach adults with an anti smoking message, you definitely have to go for shock value. Canada seems to be having a decreasing smoker population. Some people attribute this to the anti smoking pictures that are inserted into the cigarette product packaging. Some picture depict a nasty looking mouth with teeth decay and gum disease while others might show a pregnant woman populating her body and baby with cigarette smoking. Don’t smoke signs don’t always work and just telling people, “do not smoke” doesn’t seem to do it either. In this day and age of cutting edge technology, people are not as impressed with things anymore. Therefore, you have to get their attention. With anti smoking pictures and slogans that catch people’s eyes and ears, you can get the message across about how much better off they would be if they just stopped smoking.
